Post Congress Tour
Saturday and Sunday 27-28 June
This is a rare opportunity to combine a visit to Iceland's most recent hydropower
project and aluminum smelter, a geothermal power plant and to absorb the
breathtaking landscape and nature of east and northeast Iceland.
The tour sets off from Reykjavik for Egilssta̡ir, east Iceland in the morning of
Saturday 27 June. The group will then drive to the Kárahnjúkar dam and then on
to the to Fljótsdalur valley to visit the powerhouse cavern. After lunch there will be
a drive to Rey̡arfj̦r̡ur fjord for a visit to the new 350,000 ton Alcoa Fjardaál
aluminum smelter. After staying overnight in Egilssta̡ir, the tour moves to the
Krafla area in the northeast where the visit includes volcanic craters, the Krafla
geothermal station and the Hverar̦nd hotspring area. In the afternoon there will
be an opportunity to bathe at lake M̸vatn, in an open air lagoon of geothermal
waters. From M̸vatn the tour proceeds to Akureyri where there will be a evening
meal before catching a flight back to Reykjavík for an overnight stay.
